No European tariffs on subsidized Argentine biodiesel

The European Commission has decided not to impose import tariffs on Argentine biodiesel. The registration of biodiesel imports from Argentina starting in May 2018 should allow the retroactive levying of duties on biodiesel imports. This decision means a major setback for European biodiesel producers. The reason for the rejection of tariffs is that the Commission needs to collect further information on developments after the investigation period which could further confirm the preliminary findings. There are strong signs that Argentina provided support to its industry including export duties on soybeans that depressed prices of biodiesel to an artificially low level. A final decision on whether to impose punitive tariffs is now expected in February 2019.
