Effects of palm oil biodiesel on greenhouse gas emissions

A research team led by the University of Göttingen has examined the effects of biodiesel from palm oil on greenhouse gases over the entire life cycle. When palm oil from new plantations for which forests have been cut is used, greenhouse gas emissions increase by 98% compared to fossil fuels. In the second cultivation cycle, the 60% GHG savings compared to fossil fuels required by the Renewable Energy Directive are achieved. Longer cultivation cycles or new varieties that yield earlier could have a positive effect on the greenhouse gas balance.
